(BANGKOK, August 5, 2020) – It is critical that Thai government officials understand and work to protect refugee rights. Today, Fortify Rights partnered with Host International to train Thai police and immigration officers on case management for child refugees. Fortify Rights Senior Human Rights Specialist Puttanee Kangkun delivered an hour-long session on refugees in the Thai and global contexts. The officers in attendance were from Sub-Division 4 of the Thai Immigration Bureau – the central unit under the Royal Thai Police responsible for ensuring the identification and protection of refugees in Thailand. The training came in the wake of a commitment made in 2019 by the Thai Government to release children from immigration detention centers and end the practice of detaining refugee and migrant children altogether.
