(COX’S BAZAR, March 2023)—On March 25, 2023, Fortify Rights conducted an information and learning session about universal jurisdiction with a select group of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. During the workshop, Fortify Rights shared an explainer film about universal jurisdiction in the Rohingya language and updates on the universal jurisdiction complaint Fortify Rights and 16 complainants from Myanmar filed in Germany against Myanmar officials involved in atrocity crimes. The workshop provided an opportunity to respond to questions about the timeframe for the complaint as well as questions on a similar universal jurisdiction case on the Rohingya genocide that was filed in Argentina, issues related to security, and the filing itself.

Earlier, on February 16, 2023, Fortify Rights facilitated a similar meeting to provide updates to select Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh on the filing of the universal jurisdiction complaint on January 24, 2023. During this meeting, Fortify Rights shared a Rohingya-language audio version of its news release about the complaint filing and answered questions about the complaint and next steps for the case.
