What is Article 14 of the Rome Statute, and Why is it Important for Myanmar?

December 04, 2023

On December 4, 2023, Fortify Rights released an animated explainer on the mechanism established under Article 14 of the Rome Statute, which empowers member states of the International Criminal Court to request the prosecutor to open an investigation into international crimes within the court’s jurisdiction.

Fortify Rights calls on ICC member states to refer the situation in Myanmar to the Prosecutor under Article 14, which could trigger an ICC investigation into atrocities committed by the Myanmar military and its junta.

“The Myanmar people feel that the world has abandoned them— ICC member states have an opportunity to change this and to combat the double standard in the administration of international justice,” said Matthew Smith, CEO at Fortify Rights.
