(BANGKOK, February 24, 2020)—Courts around the world are often used as tools of oppression. Fortify Rights partnered with Trial Watch, an initiative founded by the Clooney Foundation for Justice in April 2019, to enable law students from Thailand’s Thammasat University to monitor trials in Thailand. The students began by monitoring the preliminary court hearing of Angkhana Neelapaijit, a prominent Thai human rights defender facing criminal defamation charges from controversial Thai poultry company Thammakaset Co. Ltd. The students continue to monitor the hearings and will produce a report at the end of the trial on the procedural compliance of the trial with international legal standards.
