(BANGKOK, December 2022)—Between October and December 2022, Fortify Rights secured ten grants totaling close to US$32,500 in emergency financial assistance to directly support at-risk Myanmar human rights defenders and their families. Three emergency funding mechanisms agreed to provide critical support to 17 Myanmar human rights defenders, including journalists, a student activist, and an anti-coup strike leader. The grants helped ensure safe relocations, access to legal support and medical assistance, and other critical resources to ensure their safety and dignity.

Since the coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, Fortify Rights has secured more than US$741,400 in emergency assistance to support more than 600 human rights defenders and their families facing security risks due to their human rights activism. Fortify Rights has also secured more than US$71,200 in emergency assistance during the past year to support refugee human rights defenders living under threats and persecution in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Malaysia.
