(BANGKOK, March 11, 2025)—On March 11, 2025, in response to a request submitted by Fortify Rights, a Thailand Senate committee agreed to investigate the situation of six Rohingya children who were arrested and detained by Thai immigration authorities on December 20, 2024. The Committee on Political Development, People Participations, Human Rights, Rights, Freedom and Consumer’s Protection assigned the Subcommittee on Human Rights Rights and Freedom to facilitate the investigation.
On March 13 and 27, the subcommittee interviewed relevant stakeholders, including the Department of Children and Youth Protection under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, to discuss the situation of six Rohingya children.
On March 21, the subcommittee visited the children, who had been relocated to the Chiang Mai Shelter for Children and Families, under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
