(BANGKOK, July 23, 2022)—On July 23, 2022, MP Padipat Suntiphada, a member of Thailand’s parliament representing the Move Forward Party, raised Fortify Rights’s work during a censure debate focusing on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s handling of the Myanmar crisis. During his 45-minute-long testimony, Padipat mentioned several issues included in Fortify Rights’s publications, including the forced return or refoulement of Myanmar refugees from Thailand, the need for humanitarian access to people fleeing Myanmar, and the situation of Myanmar refugees living in Thailand. Padipat Suntiphada also screened in parliament a short video produced by Fortify Rights showing Thai soldiers destroying a bridge used by refugees fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar.

Fortify Rights has consistently highlighted the plight of Myanmar refugees in Thailand, including through publications that exposed the destruction of a makeshift cross-border footbridge used by refugees and shortfalls in Thailand’s refugee rights record, an op-ed on Thailand’s push-back policies, and short videos on refugees fleeing military attacksand persecution in Myanmar. Fortify Rights has engaged Thai legislators on several occasions and recently provided expert testimony before Thailand’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Foreign Relations.
