(LONDON, July 2025)—On July 9, 2025, U.K. government minister Baroness Jenny Chapman of Darlington replied to parliamentary questions tabled by Lord David Alton on June 25, 2025, that Fortify Rights helped draft. The questions focused on the diplomatic and multilateral steps the U.K. Government is taking to ensure the release of political prisoners in Myanmar, including Aung San Suu Kyi, and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
In response, Baroness Chapman replied that the U.K. continues to call for the release of those arbitrarily detained in Myanmar, both bilaterally and through multilateral fora, and they have co-sponsored the U.N. Human Rights Council Resolution on Myanmar, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all those who have been arbitrarily detained, including Aung San Suu Kyi.
On the same day, U.K. parliamentarian and Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West MP, replied to a private letter sent by Lord David Alton on May 25, 2025 about the human rights situation in Myanmar. Fortify Rights assisted in drafting the letter to Catherine West MP. In her response, Catherine West MP mentioned that the U.K. stands in solidarity with those calling for a return to democracy in Myanmar and remains committed to keeping Myanmar on the international agenda. The U.K. consistently uses its role as penholder for the Myanmar crisis at the U.N Security Council to maintain a spotlight on Myanmar, convening six Security Council meetings last year.
