(YANGON, March 13, 2025)—On March 13, 2025, a group of Special Rapporteurs, including the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced, Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences, and Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, released a statement on the worsening food crisis situation in Myanmar. The statement included information Fortify Rights submitted to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food on February 18, 2025.
The statement expressed concern about the worsening food crisis in Myanmar, which is exacerbating the already dire human rights situation. Since the 2021 military coup, intensified conflict has left an estimated 15.2 million people, almost a third of the population, facing severe food shortages in 2025.
The experts urged the international community to take concrete action to deliver essential food aid to all those in need and collaborate with the National Unity Government, opposition groups, and trusted local humanitarian organizations operating in areas outside the junta’s control.
In the submission, Fortify Rights provided information regarding the state of food insecurity in Myanmar in relation to the country’s present political situation and human rights conditions.
