(DEMOSO, November 22-24, 2025)—From November 22 to 24, 2025, Fortify Rights conducted a three-day training for 16 soldiers from the Karenni Nationalities Defense Forces (KNDF) in Demoso Township, Karenni State focused on the laws of war and human rights documentation. The participatory, activity-based training was designed to strengthen practical skills to investigate crimes by the junta and the KNDF themselves.
Sessions covered the foundations of human rights law, international humanitarian law, accountability mechanisms, weapons identification for documentation purposes, informed consent, best practices for interviewing, and advocacy. KNDF participants included members from various battalions and offices, including information and media teams as well as frontline soldiers.
One participant reflected on the training, saying: “I learned about human rights, about the IIMM [Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar], the ICJ [International Court of Justice], and the ICC [International Criminal Court].
“I learned about investigations, which is good for me,” another participant said. “I was able to do interviewing and learn how to do research. … This will help our people in Karenni.”
Following the training, the KNDF invited Fortify Rights to conduct two follow-up trainings.
