(BANGLADESH, August 25, 2024)—On August 25, 2024, the seventh anniversary of the “clearance operations” in Rakhine State by the Myanmar military, nine Rohingya organizations in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh published a joint statement condemning the ongoing violence and attacks against the Rohingya people in Myanmar. The groups specifically focused on the conflict between the ethnic armed group—the Arakan Army—and the Myanmar military junta. Both parties are responsible for war crimes, including indiscriminate attacks on Rohingya civilians.
In the statement, the groups called on the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military junta to adhere to international humanitarian law.
“The international community has the responsibility to take the necessary steps for the protection of the remaining Rohingya population in Rakhine State before it is too late. Moreover, all the perpetrators must be held accountable for war crimes and brought to justice,” read the statement.
Fortify Rights provided editorial and design support to the camp-based Rohingya refugee leaders to develop the joint statement.
